Music For The Soul

Emmy-winning filmmaker James Hanlon’s (9/11) latest documentary film explores the learning experience in today’s education system - focusing on the music and arts programs throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District.

A shockingly small number of children throughout Los Angeles are given the opportunity to inspire themselves through public musical education. We learn from teachers, administrators, charter & public school principals, politicians, and most importantly - students about the power of learning music. Rory Pullens, the new head of Arts Education for LAUSD, has sounded the bells for change and has made important progress in the struggle to expand arts and music education but faces an uphill battle every day.

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” - Plato

The documentary highlights the positive impact music and arts programs are having on our children and communities in a personal way. By focusing on schools in diverse Los Angeles suburbs, we reveal similarities between children and their love of music while sharing the varying demographics and backgrounds. As we they learn, through their eyes, what music means to them - we relate to their growth and progression in a personal way. High profile individuals whose lives have been positively impacted by music are also featured.
